Northwest opens postseason at home

With the top seed in District 3-5A Division I, the Northwest Texans will defend their home turf in the first round of the playoffs. 

The Texans (7-3) will host Burleson Centennial 7 p.m. Friday at Northwest ISD Stadium. 

Northwest shared the league title with Azle and Brewer at 6-1. The Texans were awarded the No. 1 seed by a tiebreaker. 

Centennial finished district 3-4. The Spartans edged out Richland for the fourth seed thanks to a 41-14 win over the Royals. 

Spartan running back David Clerk has 854 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 61 carries. Elijah Zeh was rushed 123 times for 558 yards and eight scores. 

Clerk is also Centennial’s leading receiver with 13 receptions for 301 yards and six touchdowns. 

Centennial quarterback Phillip Hamilton is 32-for-63 passing this season for 466 yards and seven touchdowns, with two interceptions. 

The Texans fell to Azle at home in the 3-5AI finale last week, 39-36. 

Northwest quarterback Jake Strong was 17-for-38 for 209 yards, with two touchdowns and a pair of picks. 

Kenan Reil caught five of Strong’s passes for 83 yards and one score. Joseph Rivas had seven receptions for 73 yards and one trip to pay dirt. 

Texan running back Kyle Cummings tallied 30 carries for 163 yards and two touchdowns.
